ABC13/KTRK-TV Houston To Host Virtual Town Hall To Discuss Violence Against Transgender Women of Color

Virtual Town Hall Airs Thursday, June 25 (7:00 – 8:00 p.m. CDT)

ABC13, Houston’s most-watched television station, presents a one-hour virtual town hall on THURSDAY, JUNE 25 (7:00 – 8:00 p.m. CDT), highlighting the increase of fatal violence against Black transgender women and transgender women of color. ABC13’s Eyewitness News anchor Chauncy Glover will explore the sobering statistics behind these deaths, and how community activists and law enforcement are working to dismantle this culture of violence.

In 2019, Texas led the nation in murders of transgender women of color. The Human Rights Campaign says at least 15 transgender or gender non-conforming people have been fatally shot or killed by other violent means this year. HRC has been tracking reports of fatal anti-transgender violence for the past several years. As the nation grapples with race relations following George Floyd’s death, ABC13’s Eyewitness News anchor Melanie Lawson is moderating an interfaith discussion on how religious leaders are addressing the crises of racial inequality and violence.

ABC13/KTRK-TV Houston to Host Virtual Town Hall to Discuss the Relationship Between the Police And Communities of Color

Virtual Town Hall Airs Thursday, June 4 (7:00 – 8:00 p.m.)

ABC13, Houston’s most-watched television station, presents a one-hour virtual town hall on THURSDAY, JUNE 4 (7:00 – 8:00 p.m. CDT), to discuss the relationship between law enforcement and communities of color. 

Hosted by ABC13’s Eyewitness News anchors Melanie Lawson and Chauncey Glover, the town hall will address the historic tension between the police and minority groups. The special will take a closer look at police issues that have extended from the Civil Rights Movement to current times where images of George Floyd’s arrest have been shared around the world.

Panelists for the town hall include the following:

  • Trae Tha Truth, musical rapper and local community activist
  • Bun B, musical rapper and local community activist
  • Dr. Gerald Horne, Moores Professorship of History, his research has addressed issues of racism in a variety of relations involving labor, politics, civil rights, international relations and war.
  • Rev. William Lawson, president and founder of Outreach Strategists, also founding pastor of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church.

ABC13, Houston’s most-watched television station, presents a one-hour virtual town hall on THURSDAY, MAY 21 (7:00 – 8:00 p.m. CDT), to discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities across southeast Texas.

Hosted by ABC13’s Eyewitness News reporter Miya Shay, the town hall coincides with the observation of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and will discuss the disparate challenges of COVID-19 faced by the approximately 140,000 Houstonians that identify as AAPI, as well as the significant accomplishments the community has achieved in the fight against COVID-19.
